My gamertag really represents me. Goofy – it just fit me perfectly.
If you know me personally, you know I’m always laughing, I’m always making jokes.
It’s different when I get on the stage though. It’s still there a little because I crack jokes and have fun, but for the most part, I’m definitely serious.
As soon as we get on those sticks it’s just a different ballgame. If I’m playing you, you’re my enemy and I’m gonna do everything to try to get the ‘W.’
I hate losing in anything that I’m doing.
It’s been like that since I started playing NBA 2K4 with my dad in the basement of our home as a kid. It wasn’t until 2K15 that I started playing competitively and by 2K17, I’d made it to the All-Star Tournament with my team, Top Notch.
Despite losing in the tournament, there was an upside. The 2K League was announced and I just knew I was going to make it. I knew it was my time to shine.
Everybody has their own opinion. But in my opinion, I’m the best center in the league, bar none.
Since joining the league, I couldn’t have asked for a better situation. New York has always been a dream city of mine. Now that I’m playing for the Knicks franchise, there is nothing else I can ask for.
It’s definitely different from what I’m used to. It’s very fast-paced. It’s very crowded. Not to mention, it’s also expensive. I’m used to living in Houston, so it’s two totally different places.
Although the biggest plus of living here is being able to play our league games in our home city. A lot of teams have had travel issues throughout the season while trying to get to New York.
Our team is just blessed to have this opportunity to be able to stay in New York so that we don’t have to worry about timing, flight delays or missing games. We’re just here, ready to play, every week.
That’s not to say everything has been easy this season.
Early on, it was a trainwreck as our team of six players came together. It was just everybody trying to come in and be ‘that guy’ on the team. It’s the first year of the league, everybody wants to be ‘The Guy’. It happens in all type of sports.
As we kept playing, however, we knew the only thing that mattered was the win – not the points, not the stats – it’s all about winning. If we win, everybody is going to succeed.
It was a long journey. Everyone just needed to figure out their role. Once we figured that out, it was off to the races.
It helped that I had previously established a good relationship with our point guard, iamadamthe1st. He and I have such great chemistry on the pick and roll or pick and pop that opposing teams have to choose their poison between the two of us.
Once they start helping a lot on me, it opens it up for him. Once they help out on him, it opens it up for me. Once they start trying to play both, they get confused and it opens it up for the rest of our teammates to get wide-open 3s, fast-break opportunities and transition points.
Despite those early-season struggles, our team started to come together around the league’s first mid-season tournament. We already had 100% complete confidence in ourselves. That was the main part, just that confidence leading up to the tournament.
We knew we had to win THE TICKET. If we didn’t, there was a slim chance that we wouldn’t get into the playoffs. It was do-or-die for us.
Since winning the tournament and punching our ticket to the playoffs, we’re not letting off.
We’ve still gone out there trying to beat every team put in front of us. Nobody likes to lose and we want to keep that confidence going in the playoffs.
Regardless of what happens during the playoffs, the league has so far definitely been everything I expected it to be and more. I only expect it to get bigger and bigger as the years go on.
I was one of those kids that always wanted to be a pro gamer, so this is definitely a dream come true.
It has also made us recognizable figures. Having people around me come up and ask for a picture is an amazing feeling. I’m just blessed to be a position where I can take pictures with fans.
At the end of the day though, the most important thing to me is winning that championship. Nothing else, nothing more.
Our eyes are on the prize.
